The eternally expanding Travel Bucket List- a thought piece on Bucket Lists

Bucket list do-overs

We’ve started thinking lately about the expanding, bursting Bucket List. A Bucket List is a list of things you wish to do that you have never done before. It is the experiences and goals you want to carry out in your lifetime. But, does it qualify to go on a bucket list if you have already achieved it?

For example, we went to Venice and fell in love with the water city as so many do. So, we put it back on the Bucket List to go again a year later. Yes, we did! So what if it doesn’t qualify for the standard rules of a Bucket List. There were places and things in Venice that we never actually had time to see in our 4-day visit. So we put those things on the Bucket List. Sounds fair, right?

Anyway, we had an even better time the 2nd time around. We knew the nooks and alleyways and, we had a few fave restaurants to revisit. We had more time to explore other areas we didn’t get to see before. Plus, we had more time to sit around feasting and drinking instead of hastily running around trying to fit in all the sights. We even got the chance to meet a few locals and learn a bit about local life in Venice.

But how fair is it to add it to the bucket list a third time when there are countries and cities on the list still patiently waiting for their turn for us to visit? How fair is it, we get to go back again, and some people haven’t even been once?

“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” – Eleanor Roosevelt.

So… a Bucket List definition is something we wish to do in our lifetime.
And we have been to Venice twice, and now we brazenly add it again to our bucket list?
Yes, indeed, see entry No. 452. It clearly states –
Visit Venice for 2 weeks to immerse ourselves in the culture, learn the language and get to know some locals. Additionally, get to know Venice as we know our home town.

That we have never done before.

Side note – If you have never been before, add Venice to your Bucket List! It’s one of our Fave and one of the most Amazing cities in the world.

Crossing off the Bucket List

Some things have been on the Bucket List for many years. You keep adding more and more to the list. You’re so busy working, socializing, saving, and just living life. You don’t have time to cross anything off the eternally expanding Bucket List.

Finally, after spending the last few years saving, we went on an overland 4 months, 15 country road trip through Europe. We finally got to tick off so many places that had spent years on our Bucket List. Sights from calendars on our wall or bookmarked online came to life. By the end of the 4 months, we felt as if there is never enough time to live all your dreams. But as long as you dream big, dream constantly, keep adding to your Bucket List as you are ticking items off, then you are Living your dreams. Therefore, add your dreams to your Bucket List today!

One of those places that we discovered on that trip but never actually got to visit was Mostar, Bosnia.

The Bucket List addition of Mostar happened in 2015. Ten months later we packed our bags and departed again from Sydney Airport. We hit the road for another 4-month road trip to Europe. The main reason was to travel to locales such as Mostar, Bosnia. The experiences that had, just a year earlier, been added to our Bucket List. Well, the excitement is no less for not having been on the Bucket List for years. When we finally got there, we felt this overwhelming sense of excitement and satisfaction. In fact, we found it more thrilling and double the joy, as now we were living our dreams as we dreamed them.

This is why we created Travel Bugs World. So we can continue to dream Travel, and to continue to Live our Dreams. So we can share our travel dreams and inspire others to live their dreams.

Don’t act complacent, we have Today. Anything else is not guaranteed.
If you are not living your dream, make steps towards it today.
Even if it’s just something small like depositing a few dollars in your travel fund or starting a Bucket List.

  1. What a wonderful post . Firstly, the post starts with Venice! We have been once &, I’m sure, could also return 3 times.
Our bucket lists have changed over the years, as we have changed. In fact, these days, we are far more spontaneous. If a travel opportunity comes up, we may go somewhere we didn’t even have on our bucket list. Yet bucket lists are important to me. I simply love checking out websites and Insta posts for fresh travel inspiration – just like Travel Bugs World. 👌

  2. I don’t officially have a bucket list, except in my head. Have to say that is not very reliable. 😉 Maybe Bee and I should make a bucket list together. She has never been to Europe and I’ve never been to SE Asia. Agree 100 percent about Venice, I was there for 3 days and want to go back, rent an apartment and stay for at last a week.
